Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
