The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's selection chief the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.
"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Injury History
The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
